A Tucson-area company that has long specialized in predicting failure is prognosticating success with technology to help scientists unlock the secret life of atoms.

Ridgetop Group recently won two Small Business Innovation Research contracts worth $1 million each from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop analog-to-digital signal processor chips for particle accelerators used in research.

Particle accelerators are used by physicists to smash sub-atomic particles together to learn about the elemental building blocks of matter – sometimes discovering whole new classes of particles in the process.

Hackathon Update #1: The Theme is Mobile!

July 25, 2012 in Uncategorized by chrishill

The hackathon is fast approaching, and we are working to make this a great event. We have been talking to a lot of people and listening to what they have to say. There were a couple points that have been recurring: structure and theme. People felt the event seemed a bit too freeform. Fear not!

A Mobile Theme

Based on the projects and current buzz, we’ve decided on a theme of ‘mobile’. That can be a mobile app, an html5 game, or many other possibilities. Take a Raspberry Pi and put it on an RC car. Use PhoneGap to port a website into something native.

Meeting Up

Regardless of what you are doing, its important that you’re having fun doing it with the Tucson developer community.  And we want to make sure that you’re able to meet with other devs and form solid teams. Part of the structure of the event will be team building and idea development. In the beginning of the hackathon we will all spend some time getting to know each other’s skills and ideas.

By Jennifer Fitzenberger, June 14, 2012

The UA reported an increase in technology transfer activity in fiscal year 2011.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Arizona University System met the majority of its research goals in fiscal year 2011, excelling in four categories – invention disclosures, U.S. patents issued, intellectual property income and start-up companies – officials told the Arizona Board of Regents on June 14.

The news came during an update from the enterprise executive committee on the Arizona Higher Education Enterprise plan, designed to realign and strengthen the state university system.

The enterprise report, presented to the regents in 2010, outlines priorities and important discussion areas for realigning the system in a way that each state university can better focus its individual mission to benefit the system as a whole.’

A Startup Weekend Tucson Pre-event - August 10th-11th

Join us Friday through Saturday for a code writing marathon in Tucson!
Form a team, pick a category, then code something new and exciting in 24 hours to win prizes and fame!

What’s it all about?

It’s about meeting and getting to know more of the local Tucson tech community while doing something fun! The Interweb is amazing, but it can’t compare to hanging out in person with a group of like-minded people. A hackathon is an exciting, fast pasted, stimulating event where you can make a crazy cool idea into something real!

What can you do in 24 hours?

Form a team of at least 2 people (must be present to win) and create something from start to finish. You could build a complete webapp, or a cool script, or a plugin/theme or feature for a larger application. You don’t have to create something huge, but finish it and have fun.
