Tucson tech: Local bioscience group decides to pull out of larger organization

Sometimes, the most promising of marriages fall apart. About four years ago, Tucson’s bioscience industry group, the BioIndustry Organization of Southern Arizona, or BioSA, merged with the Chandler-based Arizona Biotechnology Organization (AZBio).

The idea was to create a united, statewide bio group with equal representation from the state’s three main research hubs, Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff.

But recently, the folks at BioSA decided to end the group’s affiliation with AZBio, and by extension its affiliation with the national Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).

The decision was based on a variety of factors, some of which BioSA leaders didn’t want to discuss in detail.

TUCSON, Ariz., Feb. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) tested a new propulsion system for the Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wireless (TOW) missile. Developed by ATK (NYSE: ATK), the enhanced system doubles TOW’s range and reduces the missile’s flight time by one-third.

During the test, the developmental propulsion system flew the missile more than seven kilometers (4.35 miles), reaching four kilometers (2.5 miles) in significantly less time.

Raytheon and ATK’s Missile Products Group worked closely to develop a propulsion system that improves the performance of the TOW missile. The launch, boost, sustain (LBS) propulsion system also incorporates a rocket motor designed with Insensitive Munitions (IM) features to provide added safety: IM compliant systems are less likely to react explosively when subjected to bullet and fragment impacts, external fire or other hazardous events.

More than two years after being formed from the bankruptcy assets of one of Tucson’s oldest aircraft-maintenance operations, Ascent Aviation Services is flying high.

Since taking over the operations of the former Hamilton Aerospace Technologies in 2009, Ascent has upgraded operations at Tucson International Airport and nearly doubled its work force.

Focused on providing nose-to-tail certified maintenance on Boeing 737 and McDonnell Douglas MD-80 narrow-body jets, Ascent had revenues of about $10 million in 2010, said Michael Melvin, the company’s president and chief financial officer.

Last year, Ascent boosted revenues to about $15.5 million, and, with a strong backlog of work, it expects more growth this year, Melvin said.
