Federal stimulus money will help the University of Arizona start construction on its planned Arizona Bioscience Park.

The Arizona Board of Regents and the University of Arizona won a $4.7 million grant from the federal Economic Development Administration, federal agency said today. The tax dollars will be used to pay for roads, utilities and landscaping at the future park at East 36th Street and South Kino Parkway.

Contractors will bid for the year-long job and begin work in November or December, said Bruce Wright, UA associate vice president for economic development.

“This is a big step forward in developing a core piece of the Tucson metro area,” he said.

UA works on ovary cancer detection

‘Game changer’ would prevent removal through early diagnosis

A screening system in development at the University of Arizona is expected to provide a breakthrough in the early detection of ovarian cancer.

By using holograms and merging medical and optical science, UA researchers Raymond Kostuk and Jennifer K. Barton are developing a way of seeing enough varied depth in ovarian tissue to detect microscopic cancer cells in their earliest stages. That’s a huge advance for the fight against an insidious disease that kills most women within five years of diagnosis.

The researchers expect to spend the next five years fine-tuning a wandlike instrument that’s anticipated to be a “game changer” for medicine if it does what is intended — allow high-risk women to know whether or not they actually have ovarian cancer before having their ovaries removed.

S. Ariz. job growth seen in unmanned aircraft

Unmanned aircraft probably have dropped a few thousand jobs into Southern Arizona as the technology takes off.

Here’s one sign: When the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International held its annual conference in Washington, D.C., last week, numerous economic-development experts and unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturers from Arizona attended.

Here’s another sign: Three of four primary sponsors of the conference were companies with UAV businesses in Arizona — BAE Systems Inc., Northrop Grumman Corp. and Honeywell Aerospace.

And Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems, which is developing its “KillerBee” UAV for the U.S. military’s Small Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Systems program, was a major exhibitor at the conference.
