Raytheon works to counter multiple-warhead missiles

By Dan Sullivan

ARIZONA DAILY STAR

It’s one thing to hit a single missile hurtling through space — a bigger problem is when that missile launches multiple warheads in a scattershot attack.

Raytheon Missile Systems is working to solve that problem under a $54 million contract to develop a system that will counter multiple enemy warheads with its own barrage of projectiles.

The contract from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency will build on Raytheon’s experience manufacturing the Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle — a non-explosive, guided “kill vehicle” designed to track and smash into enemy threats outside the Earth’s atmosphere — for the emerging ground-based Ballistic Missile Defense System.

With the aspirations of countries such as North Korea and Iran to develop their own ballistic-missile systems, the United States and its allies are looking to develop new ways to counter missiles with multiple warheads.

UA researchers, mining leaders work together

By Aaron Mackey

ARIZONA DAILY STAR

A $17.5 million UA mining research center unveiled on Tuesday could boost the industry while developing technology that could limit the environmental impact of mines and increase worker safety, researchers and business leaders said.

Known as the Institute for Mineral Resources, the program will pair mining company leaders with University of Arizona researchers to solve several industry problems such as using fresh water to extract certain materials.

The issue of using water in mining is critical in the Southwest, as there is both a high level of minerals that could be mined and an increasingly limited water supply, said Mark Barton, a UA geosciences professor, during a kickoff event for the institute.

Raytheon honored for decoy vehicle

ARIZONA DAILY STAR

Aviation Week magazine has named Raytheon Co.’s Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD), developed at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, the winner of the 2008 Program Excellence Award in the system-research and development category.

The MALD is a low-cost, air-launched programmable aircraft that weighs less than 300 pounds and has a range of about 575 miles. The unmanned craft protects aircraft by duplicating the combat flight profiles and signatures of U.S. and allied aircraft.

Raytheon is currently in low-rate initial production of the MALD under a $34 million contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force in July.

The company also is working on a communications-jamming version of the craft. Scott Muse is Raytheon’s MALD program director.
